The Legend of Bhagat Singh is a film based on the life of revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, also called Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Written by Salim-Javed and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film stars Ajay Devgan in the title role with Kareena Kapoor playing his cousin Sukhdev Thapar's wife Jai Kishan. The movie was released on October 16, 2002. The film begins with an 18-day jail break sequence famously known as "Quit India Movement" which leads to the death of British police officer John Saunders at Lahore (now in Pakistan). The film then goes into flashback when the scene shifts to the early 1930s in British India when Bhagat Singh is studying in National College at Lahore. The scene goes on with the execution of Jatindra Nath Das, Bhagat Singh's senior in college who had thrown leaflets in protest of the Simon Commission in 1929 which sparked off the nation-wide non-cooperation movement against British rule. This makes Bhagat Singh and his friends question this action by Das which leads them to participate actively in various activities related to protests against British rule. From then on, they are involved actively into political activities. They announce the formation of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army and announce a list of members who will form this army. The list consists of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Shivaram Rajguru and Jai Gopal. Bhagat Singh is then arrested and put into jail for his participation in protests against British rule. The film then proceeds to show how Bhagat Singh revolts against the system to free India. One day in prison, he and his fellows meet Ishwar Chandra (Ashish Vidyarthi). He offers them the freedom to leave India if they want but after that they must never come back since it is a condition for their countrymen to remain imprisoned for many years. Bhagat Singh in his reply asks for democracy in India in the same way they were asking for in England. He also tells them of the fact that there were millions of Indians who want freedom but are unable to get it. The film then moves to Japan, where Bhagat Singh is meeting leaders of the Indian independence movement, who empathize with him and are eager to get him back. Bhagat Singh tells them about how he wants to fight for freedom but cannot do so without weapons. As a result, the Indian prisoners are brought up with guns and rifles after which they go back to India via Afghanistan into Punjab where they attack police stations and railway lines starting the "Quit India movement". The movement is brutally suppressed and the revolutionaries who were active in it fight against the British as a result. Bhagat Singh is then arrested again and sentenced to death which leads to his martyrdom. The title song "Aye Watan Tere Liye" was composed by Amar Mohile, with lyrics written by Prasoon Joshi. The song was sung by Altaf Raja and Mohammed Aziz and picturised on both Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor who play the role of Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar respectively. cfa1e77820
