The following strategies will give you a better idea of how to calculate odometer readings for your car so you can truly benefit from your car's potential. - The Miles Method - If a vehicle travels from one place to another located 500 miles away, then 500 miles divided into 5,000 miles = .05 or 5%. Therefore, 500 divided by 5,000 = .001 or 1%. In other words, every fifth mile is at a rate of 1 mph. - The Kilometer Method - If a car travels from one place to another located 500 kilometers away, then 500 kilometers divided into 3,000 kilometers = .166 or 16.6%. Therefore, 500 divided by 3000 = .020 or 2%. In other words, every 20th kilometer is at a rate of 1 km/hr. - The Average Speed Method - If a vehicle drives 10 miles per hour for an hour and 30 minutes until it reaches its destination then this vehicle is traveling at an average speed of 10 mph. Therefore, 10 divided by 60 = .06 or 6%. In other words, every six miles is at a rate of one mile per hour. - The Constant Speed Method - If a vehicle drives 30 miles per hour for a certain amount of time until it reaches its destination then this vehicle is traveling at an average speed of 30 mph. Therefore, 30 divided by 60 = .033 or 3.3%. In other words, every 33 miles is at a rate of one mile per hour. - The Acceleration Method - If you drive with constant speed for an entire distance until reaching your destination then the distance traveled equals the constant speed over the entire distance divided by the constant speed over the time spent driving at constant speed. For example, a car travels 10 kilometers at a constant speed of 20 km/h for a total of 2 hours. With the acceleration method you would multiply 10 by .2 and then divide that number into 2 to get a final answer of 5. - The Strategy Method - Calculate the distance traveled according to one strategy and then choose from one of these four strategies on how to calculate odometer readings. - Distance Traveled - If you know the distance traveled by your vehicle either in kilometers or miles, then you will have an easier time calculating your odometer readings for cars with manual transmissions.
